School Improvement and Support
School improvement and support work is a key part of the work of Gloucestershire’s eight Teaching School Alliances and is also still a key role for Gloucestershire Local Authority. This support can take place in a variety of contexts and over varying time frames. It can be funded in a variety of ways and can be provided by a wide range of system leaders.
Some Myths Debunked….
School improvement and support work is only for schools who are in Special Measures or who are judged as Requires Improvement FALSE…many Good or Outstanding Schools will work with a system leader on current areas of focus, this is part of what keeps them Good or Outstanding….
School improvement and support work has to last for a sustained period FALSE…Some requests for support only need a morning or day, although other arrangements will be more formal and could last 12 months+
School improvement and support work has to be expensive FALSE… in some circumstances it is possible to apply for grant funding, or Teaching Schools may have other grants/funds that they can use.
Who Provides the Support?
Most support is provided by System Leaders –NLEs, LLEs or SLEs. These system leaders are usually attached to particular Teaching School Alliances.
Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams, in similar positions, in other schools. They understand what outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context. A directory of active SLEs in Gloucestershire can be found here
Local Leaders of Education (LLEs) are successful Heads who work alongside other Heads to drive forward improvements and build capacity to ensure that improvements can be sustained. The role of the LLE is to work outside their own school, providing support and coaching to another Headteacher, and their school, with the aim of school improvement. A directory of active LLEs in Gloucestershire can be found here
National Leaders of Education (NLEs) are outstanding Heads who, together with the staff in their schools (designated national support schools 'NSS'), use their skills and experience to support other schools. In addition to leading their own schools, NLEs work to increase the leadership capacity of other schools to help raise standards. A directory of active NLEs in Gloucestershire can be found here
